BIG NIGHT

In my opinion the film big night wasn’t necessarily one of the best films that we have watched all semester. If anything it will be more towards the middle of the pack where it wasn’t the best but it wasn’t the worst either. With that being said the final scene of the film is a very important scene. To start this off I just wanna say I really like the camera angle in that final scene it was an interesting choice of camera angle and I’ve never seen an angle like that where I was able to cover the entire kitchen for one and it just it just gave a better perspective on what was actually happening in that final scene. You can see the chef and what he was doing and how he was making egg and Which was very interesting because he was basically teaching the audience on how to make a omelette. Just the oil in a pan heat the pan up beat the egg and then put the egg in the pan and then let it cook on a low heat and that’s basically how he made his omelette and it was a very simple process and I think that was very important because now people would learn how to make omelettes by just watching that first half of the last scene. It’s interesting because when he first walked into the kitchen his waiter is laying on the table and that just shows like how how much of what happened the previous night and how crazy the previous night was so he makes the breakfast for his waiter and his brother comes in and he made enough breakfast for his other friend as well.My favorite part about the scene is how silent to seeing is and I think that’s why the scene is so important because it just is basically the aftermath of what happened in the previous night and it’s just so quiet and so silent nobody’s talking they’re just enjoying a meal together because now they have calm down and now the stress is like releasing from their body.

Food=Culture

I was very excited to be able to watch both of these movies. I am always glad to watch a movie that has a strong black cast. It’s a bonus to be able to watch the movie as an assignment for one of my classes. Both films were really good films, but of the two I would rather watch soul food. There’s no underlying reason for this I just personally prefer so food over once upon a time we were colored. Both phones do a very great job at showing culture through food. Both films utilize very cultural food choices which allows the food to express culture itself. One way so food does this is when the mother talks about how it’s a good thing for your lover to Cook your favorite dessert for you which was sweet potato pie. And once upon a time we were color the culture was shown through the actual making of the food. Through those rough times people were brought together through food and I just thought that was a beautiful thing because that’s really how it is in the real world. They use many different cultural foods such as sweet potato pie chicken mac & cheese and even the way that they go about making the food and how they eat the food is very cultural as well. It is also interesting to see how the family members interact because the way they fight and the way they make up and gets into gather and how they love each other is a show of how their culture is express throughout the film. Overall I thought both films were done very well and I can appreciate them for what they are and what happens in each film. I get a sense and feel of like what is happening is realistic and genuine and I love that about both of these films.

Eat Drink Man Woman & Tortilla?

Watching both films Eat Drink Man Women and Tortilla Soup i enjoyed both of these films greatly. For each film i loved certain aspects more than the other film. In eat drink man woman i really appreciated the food and the preparation of the food more in that film than in tortilla soup.just from the beginning of the class this semester i fell in love with eat drink man woman for that specific reason. For comparison of  both films eat drink does a better job at portraying the food and they use more exquisite food. In tortilla soup they use food thats not as special but i feel like the food that is used in this film is more heart warming and just makes the audience feel like they are at home. Another thing about tortilla soup is that it is more sexual than eat drink man woman. This film has way more sex scenes and is a lot more revealing than the original. With that being said the remake has an interesting way of handling situations within the movie. For instance when the middle daughter finds out that the guy that she is messing with is getting married it seems that she is more content with it rather then being furious, whereas in the original she is absolutely furious when she finds out this information. In my opinion it seems to me that tortilla soup is a little more family oriented than that of eat drink man woman. Many of the probles that happen in the remake dont really seem as
dramatic as those of eat drink man woman. Nevertheless i can appreciate both movies for what they are i could understand why many more people would most likely prefer to watch tortilla soup i personally would rather watch eat drink man woman for the simple fact of the preparation of food and the food that they actually use.

(Chocolat) what is Roux's favorite chocolate?

When i first started watching the film “Chocolat”, i thought i was going to be sitting through two hours of straight boredom. About 15 minutes into the film I realized that I was wrong. There was something about the chocolate of the film that even made me the viewer get my spirits lifted up. My mouth could not help but to begin to water when the main character of the film began talking about all of the different types of chocolate that she made. I was sold when she mentioned the spicy chocolate. With that being said if the chocolate of the film had that much of an impact on me, someone who is just viewing the film then it certainly had a huge effect on the other characters in the film. The chocolate plays a very important role in the film. In my opinion the chocolate of the is very similar to
that of the fruit that was bitten by Adam and Eve in the bible. The reason why i say this is because it's as if everyone in town is in complete darkness and they are so focused on following the orders
of their religion, but once they take a bite of the chocolate they begin to see the light and break out of the habits that they were called upon to do and they now begin to do what they want to do and
they truly live their lives. For instance the wife that was getting abused by her husband probably
would have never rebelled against him if she had never eaten a piece of the chocolate. Also while watching this film I learned a lot more about french culture. In french culture it seems to me that the romantic love they have for each other is more passionate than that of other cultures. You can see this in many different couples throughout the movie. Overall this was a very good movie and I would definitely recommend watching it. Although I still am very curious as to what Roux’s favorite chocolate is.

Thanksgiving

First of all i thought the movie “what's cooking” was a really good movie. I loved the fact that it was very diverse and it included many different cultural backgrounds. With that being said because of all the different cultures that are within the film they did a very good job at showing the differences between each household. For example in the hispanic house a lot of the walls were orange and it just had a hispanic feel to it. The way they would compare and contrast is that they would place exactly what's happening in each scene side by side. When one family was making the turkey all the families were making the turkey and you saw the different ways they made their food. The asian family put sriracha sauce on their turkey. They also showed the differences in how the food was prepared. In the black household the yams were made in more of a casserole style. Where as in the hispanic family the yams were baked. They also prepared the mashed potatoes differently. Some families crushed them with their hands other families blended them. Another just cut them up or even mashed them with an actual masher. They also showed the difference by the food and utensils they were actually using at the table. For instance the asian family was not using a fork and a knife at the table. They were using chopsticks. The food that was on the table was actually very diverse. For desert the hispanic family had flan and dulce de leche. The black family had blueberry pie. The asian family had noodles on their table when the black family was having mac and cheese on their plates. The film did find ways to throw curveballs at the audience because of the turkey being burnt they ended up eating fried chicken. The black family did not eat and prepare typical food that you would see in a black household and the grandmother mentions this multiple times within the food. My favorite part of the movie was at the end when they revealed that all of the houses were on the same block as each other. I thought that was the best part of the movie.

Dr. McNichols Discussion

Dr. McNichols talked about many different things that are related to that of the mexican culture. She talked about the history of mexico, how the women of mexico used to be treated, magical realism and the food of the mexican culture. Her talk is related to our film and topic because our film takes place in Mexico and contains a lot of mexican culture and history within it. Also our film is in the style of magical realism. Our film is taking place within the 1900s which plays a huge part in the plot and what happens to the characters and what they are talking about within the film. I found this film to be very interesting, because when  Dr. McNichols was talking about how the women were being mistreated. I thought it was the men of the world mistreating them. In reality or at least within the movie it was the mother of the daughter mistreating her. The mother was only doing this because she was keeping up with the culture of what she is used to. I thought it was pretty cruel that just because she was the last born daughter of the family she wasn't able to marry the love of her life. What made matters worse was the fact that her sister was the one that married the love of her life. So while her sister got to live her life the youngest daughter had to be mistreated by the mother. I found this story to be very similar to that of Cinderella the way she was the only one that had to have a hard time. What I also found interesting was the role that food had within this film. It was almost as if food was what underlyingly drove the movie. In many of the scenes you always saw the characters either cooking or eating something. The characters even talked about food in casual conversations. An example of this was when the mother was talking to the doctor about how her daughter and her newly wedded husband should move to texas. She makes a reference to drinking chile without water. Overall i thought this was a very good film. The one problem i had with the film was the way it transitioned. It was as if a lot of the movie was being left out. One second there was a baby being born and the next cut a year has passed. I think they could have done a better job with the cuts and how they progressed the movie. If they were going to do it this way they could have at least made it known that they were jumping this fast. If not then add more so we as the viewers can actually see the progression.

Metaphorical meaning of food

While i was watching this movie i found it to be very interesting. The reason why i thought this movie was interesting was because of how similar the social aspect of it was to the life we are all living right now. In the movie its as if the middle class was completely erased and the upper and lower class were more considered to be black and white with no gray area. In the movie you could clearly tell who was living well and who was not living well. With that being said the metaphorical meaning of food to me was that food really meant you were living life and you were living well. That is pretty much the same way we live today but just a little different. For example today when someone is eating a dish such as steak and lobster they would be considered to have a fair amount of money. In the movie and elegant dish or food that represented wealth were simple foods such as meat or jelly. It is very hard to think of what i would do in the situation. That basically means im being asked what i would do if i was poor and barely had food if any to eat. To that regard i would probably become a thief and steal food from other people just to survive. If that didn't work out for me then i probably would become a police officer like the main character in the movie and i would help stop the greedy criminals like myself form committing thefts or other petty crimes. Although even that option probably would not be the best option either because im not getting paid much and also id have to deal with a lot of hungry people who are trying to fight to live in a poverish world.

Romance in the movie

In the movie mostly martha love is expressed in many different ways. In addition to the love being expressed in many different ways there are also different types of love between the different relationships that occur during the movie. One way love is being expressed is through the obvious way and that is food. Both martha and mario use food as a way to speak and show their love for others. For example when mario made food for martha this was his way of showing her that he loves her. When martha made food for her niece that was her way of showing her niece that she loved her. When her niece said she did not want to eat the food that martha made for her it was almost as if she was rejecting the love that martha was trying to give to her. The few different types of love that are shown in the movie are motherly love between martha and her niece, romantic love between martha and mario and family love between mario martha and the niece. The role of food in the movie is very interesting yet simple. The food or the cooking that martha does is really her only way she knows how to communicate with other people. All she really knows how to do is express her feelings through her cooking. Once someone does not like her cooking she either shuts down or gets really angry. You can see examples of these two events when she interacts with her niece and the one customer that does not like her food. Her life is like a recipe and she likes to follow that recipe. When something in that recipe does not go according to how its supposed to go then thats when martha begins to have a hard time.

Why food and films

I chose this class for a couple of different reasons. The main reason I chose this class was because I could use it to fulfil one of the requirements for my major. Once I got into the class i then began to look for other reasons of why i joined the class. Originally i thought the class was about the fake food that is used as props during films. So i did research on food that was used in cinema. Another reason i chose this class was because i love food, so choosing this class just makes sense. In this course i am hoping to learn more about how food is incorporated within film. With that being said that means that im also learning about the different foods form around the world that are being used within the film. Im also excited about the different cultures that are involved with the food. I come from a spanish and african american and hispanic background, so growing up i have experienced a lot of food from those cultures. I want to learn more not just about the food from around the world and of other cultures but also more about the food and the cultures of the ones that i am already familiar with. Although i do not watch many food films my favorite food film is ratatouille. This film was such a good film when i used to watch it as a kid. Even now when i go back and watch it it still is such a good movie. The way they portray food in the movie is incredible. They teach the viewers that food can be more than just something you eat. It can be more than just throwing ingredients together. This film shows that food and cooking itself is an art.
